Undergraduate Scholarship in Denmark for Non-EU students

It is now possible for highly qualified students, who are not from EU/EAA countries or Switzerland, to apply for a scholarship. This will cover tuition and contribute to living expenses while studying at UCL. The scholarship covers the tuition fee for one semester (4 months), and additionally you will receive approximately 6000 DKK each month to contribute to your living expenses.

Depending on your nationality, you will have to pay Danish tax. We will inform you of this if you are selected for a scholarship.
You can only apply for the scholarship to study at the Department of Social Education, the Department of Teacher Education or the Department of Nursing. All three departments are located in Odense.
TWhat we can offer
For the autumn 2016 you can only apply for a scholarship for studies at our Departments of Nursing.
At the Department of Nursing, you combine the English module: Nursing, Ethics  and Research-Based Knowledge (15 ECTS) with a clinical placement (15 ECTS) at a Danish health-care facility for a total duration of 4 months. Clinical placement at a department appropriate for your studies will provide you with insights to the Danish health-care system.

Can you apply?

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must be:
  • applying to participate in one of the above-mentioned courses
  • a citizen of a country outside the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland
  • enrolled in a full degree higher education programme in your home country related to either nursing, social education or teacher education.
You are not eligible to apply for a scholarship if you:
  • are studying in Denmark on the grounds of a bilateral exchange agreement
  • have a legal claim to the rights of Danish citizenship
  • have been granted a residence permit at the time of the application admission by the Danish Aliens Consolidations Act §9c, subsection 1, as the child of a foreign citizen who has been granted a residence permit in accordance with the Danish Aliens Consolidations Act §9a, and who is a citizen of a country that is not acceded to the EU or covered by the EEA agreement

  • High school transcripts documenting level of English, grade achieved, and if possible number of hours taken.
  • Documentation of any English language proficiency tests you may have taken (TOELF, IELTS, CAE etc.)
  • Any further documentation of your English proficiency such as courses, longer stays in English speaking countries etc.
Once we have evaluated your documentation of English proficiency, we may call you for a phone interview to ensure that your level is sufficient to study at University College Lillebælt.

Exemption

You are exempt from documenting your English skills if you are currently pursuing a degree in one of the following countries: USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.

Application

The deadline for applying for the autumn semester is 1 May 2016 and you will apply for the scholarship at the same time you apply for studies via the on-line MoveON application. Any applications recieved after this deadline will be declined.

PhD in Engineering: Optimisation for novel structural-material configuration (PhD Studentship)

Project title: Optimisation for novel structural-material configuration
This PhD project will develop a numerical optimization method for novel design of structures and/or materials. The primary approach of interest is topology optimization using the level set method to produce new and unintuitive design. The method is applicable at materials and structural scale and the coupling of scales and/or multiple physics (e.g. structural and electromagnetics) for multifunctional structures is of substantial interests. The material may be composites or metal or smart material. The project is primarily numerical and computational in nature with an interest in finite element and/or PDE systems and a keen enthusiasm to learn engineering optimization based on multivariable calculus. The primary tasks will be conducted by programming in C/C++. The PhD is placed is an active research group located both at Cardiff and UC San Diego and will require traveling between the two institutions although the degree awarding institution and primary base will be Cardiff. Working collaboratively and cooperating with the research group and external collaborators will be essential to the success of the project.

Funding

This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).
One studentship is available.

Eligibility

Residency: This studentship is open to students of any nationality. Students classified as international for fee purposes have to self-fund the difference between home and international fees.
Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first class or a good 2.1 MEng degree and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in a relevant subject area (engineering, physics, applied mathematics).

How to Apply

In the first instance, you should submit a CV & Covering Letter to Engineering-PGR@Cardiff.ac.uk.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU QUOTE THE STUDENTSHIP REFERENCE ‘ENG-HAK-2015/2’ IN THE EMAIL SUBJECT FIELD.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit an online application form.
The application deadline is 15 June 2016
Cardiff University reserves the right to close applications early should sufficient applications be received.

DocSend raises $8M for smarter document sharing

Document analytics startup DocSend has raised $8 million in new funding. Naturally, co-founder and CEO Russ Heddleston said he used his company’s tools to make the deal.
DocSend launched at our Disrupt NY conference two years ago, offering users a different way to send email attachments. The attachments are presented in a web viewer, meaning that you get notifications whenever someone opens them, as well as analytics data about how much time they spend viewing each page.
At first glance, that might sound suspiciously similar to the exasperating read receipt requests that seem to pop up in my inbox every day, but Heddleston argued, “It’s not a way to track people. It’s a way to communicate more effectively.”
After all, he said that as communication has become easier, “We’ve gotten lazy. As we try to communicate with more and more people, the feedback loop gets looser and looser, and when you send these big documents, you don’t know what happens when you don’t hear back.”
And there are benefits besides knowing what people are reading. For example, you can upload new versions of a document to the same link (so you don’t have to tell everyone “Wait! Read this new version!”), or you can send out multiple links for the same document and control access individually. And from a pure presentation perspective, Heddleston said businesses appreciate being able to use a document  viewer that can be customized with their own branding.
As I mentioned, one of the big use cases is fundraising — in fact, Heddleston said that just based on anecdotal conversations with customers, he can say that DocSend has already been used to raise more than $1 billion in funding. (In an emailed statement, mNectar CEO Wally Nguyen said that thanks to DocSend, “I knew which firms to focus on, I could be confident my deck was engaging, and I kept control of my materials throughout the fundraise.” mNectar has raised more than $9 million in funding.)
